Dry Composting Toilet – An Urwish initiave

During Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Urwish introduced the concept of Dry Composting Toilet today with the help of its team members and mentor.

Open defecation in rural areas has been discouraged and encouragement has been given to have a toilet in the house . While there is significant improvement in the sanitation situation in rural India, issues such as sustainability of sanitation through sustained usage of toilet facilities, non availability of water for sanitation, pollution of ground n surface water due to conventional flush and discharge or drop and store system of sanitation still need to be addressed.

Most part of the country is facing water crisis. The flushing toilet uses large amount of clean water to flush away a small amount of excreta.

Composting toilet is a type of dry toilet , that uses predominantly aerobic processing system to treat human excreta, by composting or engineered aerobic decomposition. These toilets generally use little or no water and may be used as an alternative to flush toilets. Composting toilet saves about 40 litre of water per capita per day.

Composting toilet saves water, prevents contamination and pollution of water and brings back the nutrients in human excreta back to the soil in the form of good manure. Government’s efforts towards recognition and Awareness and most importantly acceptance of dry composting toilets is a must.
