From poisoning and injuring aquatic life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our localities and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and drains, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet.
India isn’t alone in its efforts to deal with plastic waste. About 75 percent of plastic waste in the U.S. ends up in landfills, and less than 10% is successfully recycled. (Most of the rest is combusted for energy.)
In response, Earth Day 2018 focuses on fundamentally changing human attitude and behaviour about plastics and catalysing a significant reduction in plastic pollution.
URWISH addresses to End Plastic Pollution by:
- Educate and mobilise citizens to control and diminish plastic pollution
- Inform and instil in the local residents to take personal responsibility for the plastic pollution that each one of us generates by choosing to reject, reduce, reuse and recycle plastics
- Work with individuals and networks and make Earth Day 2018 a platform to End Plastic Pollution by building like-minded partnerships.
- Promote the work that cities and local governments are doing to tackle plastic pollution
URWISH works on key constituents and influences to build a world of educated consumers of all ages who understand the environmental, climate and health consequences of using plastics.
Today, on April 22, 2018 we engaged campus residents and youth, faith leaders, students and teachers to celebrate Earth Day in a novel manner by our initiative.
In sum, we used the power of Earth Day today by starting a “Herbal Garden” in our enclave to elevate and make individuals aware of the issue of plastic pollution in the global agenda and inspire and demand effective action to reduce and control it.
One needs to hold yourself accountable for your actions, and that’s how we’re going to protect the Earth.
